Project: Intelligent Maps of Accessibility (MAIRAA)

imagens projetos MAPAS

During 2017/2, the ReAbilitArte extension project will expand the survey and mapping of architectural accessibility at the campus of Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), through Awareness Workshops (in partnership with Sensibiliza-UFF and Instituto NovoSer), and through on field Mapping Pull-Together Events using the App: MAIRAA "Mapas de Acessibilidade Inteligentes - ReAbilitArte" which is being entirely developed by undergraduate UFRJ students.

acessibilidade UFRJ é responsabilidade de tod@s

ReAbilitArte is a group of friends (students, technicians, teachers, volunteers) who intend to improve the future and the daily life of people with disability. We perform research, events, discussions, meetings, workshops.. (check last events: programs and media).

Accessible university? The last population survey (by IBGE, Brazilian Institute for Geography and Statistics) revealed that half of employed people with disability earn LESS than ONE minimum wage (R$ 900, or ca. US$ 300/month). This is a dramatic situation, which may only be reverted when all will be granted access to Superior Teaching Institutions. Today, at UFRJ, we count less than 0.8% of people with disability, whereas they account for almost 25% of the general Brazilian population. One of the reasons for such exclusion is the lack of readiness of the buildings and sidewalks. By using "collective intelligence" and digital technologies, we may now build a cooperative accessibility map, mobilizing a network of people who contribute to populate the map, with their difficuties, experiences and solutions so we can build universities and cities that are more acessible for all.

The MAIRAA project - Inteligents Maps of Accessibility:
- In 2013, the 1st Forum for Accessible University created such network of motivated people, and gathered experts in accessibility to discuss possible methodologies to diagnose architectonic accessibility conditions in the campi. We then gathered several students and groups from Computation, Geography, Physical and Occupational Therapy, Assistive Technology, Speech Therapy, Architecture, Arts,.. to design an efficient strategy to map routes, classrooms, bathrooms, libraries, etc. in some buildings of the Campus.
- In 2015, the 2nd Forum for Accessibility and Assistive Technology at UFRJ reunited and extended this network. In several sessions organized in partnership with UFRJ Innovation Agency, Center for Computation and Electronics, COOPE Lab for Work and Training, and Superior Intendancy for Student Affairs, we gathered more than twenty projects coordinated at UFRJ and dealing with ACCESSIBILITY, ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY, JOB TRAINING or PROFESSIONAL INCLUSION. See below the link for short videos describing some of those projects (Check here videos describing some projects at UFRJ)
We launched the new LOGO for ACCESSIBILITY at UFRJ and presented the "beta" version of the "Mapas de Acessibilidade da UFRJ" App for Android and Windows.
We also evaluated and planned new action strategies together with all Pro-rectors at UFRJ and the Public Ministry.
- In September of 2016, the President and Rector of UFRJ, Prof. Roberto Leher, installed the Permanent Forum for an Accessible and Inclusive UFRJ, as and official space for discussion, elaboration and support for the development and the implementation of institutional politics for accessibility. Now organized in three chambers (Laws, Academic issues, Accessibility and quality of life), the Permanent Forum for an Acsessible and Inclusive UFRJ brings meetings OPEN TO THE ENTIRE COMMUNITY(students, technicians, administratives, teachers, outsourced, volunteers), every third thursday of each month.
Follow main news in the UFRJ Accessibility Forum Facebook page.
The collective mapping of accessibility conditions of all the campi at UFRJ is recognized as an important tool and a priority action to define and guide the actions of university offices and executives.
- Now, with the tool, the desire to change and the support of UFRJ officials, time has come do roll up our sleeves and set to work to turn our UFRJ into a less inaccessible place! In order to achieve this, we will start to map the actual situation of architectural accessibility of the campi, to obtain a full and up-to-date vision of difficulties and, then, to elaborate practical solutions to improve inclusion. MAIRAA is not only a tool to identify problems and complain, but also serve to unit proactive forces. Therefore, we work in close cooperation with other institutions of UFRJ (UFRJ Agency for Innovation; Division for Inclusion, Accessibility and Community Affairs; Faculty Dean and Pro-Rector's offices; University Infrastructure Authorities; Technical Bureau; and colleagues from many other inclusive projects...) as well as organizations and individual from the civil society, with or without disability (Sensibiliza-UFF, Instituto NovoSer, volunteers).

Wanna peep how the Map looks like?
Remember how it was BEFORE the renovation of the sidewalk between HU and BRT, performed by the University Infrastructure Authorities:
(3 min clip,
WITH SUBTITLES: click on the "CC" control below the video box, and move your mouse pointer away from the window)

2) MAIRAA Web version (in test)
Below you may have a look at the still very PRELIMINARY Web version of the region containing Center for Health Sciences - University Hospital - Kindergarten School- Bus Rapid Transport Terminal, with color codes indicating the level of accessibility of sidewalks AFTER the renovation of the stretch shown in the above video.
Experiment navigating throughout the map, click on the STARRED ICONS to open pop-ups with snapshot of the locations.
Inside the Center for Health Sciences, check the bathrooms, counters, elevators, parking spots, etc...
Try to experimento with LAYER selection to visualize different levels of the building.
Zoom-out using GoogleMap tools, and see how much work is still left at Ilha do Fundão campus, and in other building of UFRJ (areas in LIGHT YELLOW shading at Praia Vermelha, Institute for Social Sciences, Application School, Xerém, Macaé,..).
Let's complete this map TOGETHER, before expanding the map outside of the university and to the entire city!

3) APP for Android (version beta 1.1 - work in progress)
Below are some screenshots of the APP for portable devices (Android operated cell phones and tablets):
